THE 100 BEST JOBS FOR THE 1990's AND BEYOND

THE SEMIPROFESSIONAL MOST IN DEMAND

Paralegals are the semiprofessionals who will be most in demand in the 1990s. While the demand for lawyers is expected to grow by 71 percent in the 1990s, jobs for paralegals are expected to balloon by 104 percent in the same time period. What's significant about this is that "para" anything will be in demand because these workers are technicians, and technicians in every category will be sought after. They are the people who take detail work from professionals and free them up to do their thing - in other words, to make big bucks. Other semiprofessional jobs with a good future outlook include dental technicians, ophthalmic technician, medical records technicians, administrative aides, library technicians. home health aides, surgical technicians, leader aides and educational assistants.

  • Testimonials From Past Students

Hi, my name is Eskinder Agonafer and I am one of the Graduated Student of A1 Legal Services and Training Ltd. The course I took helped me to understand how the Law could be used as a vehicle for achieving social justice.

Under Mr. Lincoln's guidance I have learned Canadian Civil Litigation, (Immigration Law, Traffic Offenses, Small Claims Court, US Waiver & Pardon, Personal Injury, Uncontested Divorce, Landlord/Tenant and Criminal Summary.)

He thought using hands-on technique as well as practical. Because of his method of teaching I was able to directly assist him with trial preparation and also accompanying him to court during trials. That gave me a taste of the real world in terms of the different cases he and I acted on. I also attended many meeting and further become a member of some of the most well-respected Legal Associations with the help of him, with his guidance I have consistently represented clients in Traffic Court and Small Claims Court, which I believe prepared me tremendously for my future career in Law and opens my career paths, many of which I now find worthwhile.

Furthermore, he gave me an Academic Reference to go to law school which I believe gave me the encouragement and motivation needed to continue my future legal study.

To sum it all up, I would recommend anyone to take this particular course because it provides a greater futurity.

Sincerely,

Eskinder Agonafer

Testimonial fromVR Placement

March 17, 2004

To A1 Legal Services & Training Ltd.

Dear Mr. Allen;

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for providing a job placement opportunity for Shafaq Butt, helping her re-integrate back to work. You have been very accommodating to her, given the fact that she has speech and hearing impairments.

Your staff have been very patient, supportive and have treated Shafaq with a great deal of respect, made her feel at ease in the office and gave her a sense of being a member of the office team. You have allowed Shafaq to be exposed to all aspects of administrative work, which helped her confidence; Shafaq had never worked for an employer since her training. I am please to report to you that Shafaq thoroughly enjoyed her work and would now like to seek full time employment. At first, she did not know whether she would be capable of working as an Administrative Assistant especially when as she has hearing and speech impediments.

As a Vocational Counselor, it is always difficult to find an employer who would offer job placement opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. Mr.Allen, you have demonstrated that it is possible to work with persons with disabilities, and that in a supportive environment, these individuals can be able to seek competitive employment.

Again I thank you! You are truly a responsible employer and good member of the community.

Sincerely, Soo Mathers

Director, VR Placement

Most importantly, you gave me a chance to demonstrate that even with a hearing impairment, I can do productive work.

Mr. Allen, you have been very patient, helpful, and very supportive for me. I enjoyed my work placement very much. Again thank you.

THINGS OF INTEREST

As quoted from the NATIONAL PARALEGAL REPORTER,

Summer 2000 Volume 24 Number 5

Advantages:

* Flexible hours-schedule can be modified to meet family needs, etc.

*Increased earning potential-the more hours you work, the more income you earn

*Opportunity to expand practice areas

*Ability to be more active in and attend professional association meetings

*Ability to write off more professional expenses on income taxes

*Opportunity to work with persons who are more pleasant and less difficult

*Opportunity to be choosy about type of work you will perform; perform substantive work more regularly

*Ability to meet deadlines by working extended hours, evenings or weekends, right from home

Disadvantages:

*If you don't work, you don't earn money.

*You have to work more hours to cover office expenses and other overhead costs.

*Responsible to remain current on practices, procedures and statutes in more areas of law

*Cannot limit work time by becoming too consumed by professional activities

*May require incorporating and ulitizing services of lawyers and /or accountants

*Exposed to more persons to whose personalities and work ethics you must adapt

*Often needed for the most mundane, routine tasks that a small firm cannot afford to have its own staff perform

*Attorneys unfamiliar with your other workload may be less understanding when emergency or short deadline task arises

Biggest Pitfalls

Although the downsides of running a contract paralegal business are few, they can be the most influential factors in your success or failure. For instance, no one goes to work and expects to wait forever to get paid. Unfortunately, all freelancers face this possibilities at one time or another, and it's not pretty.

One might think a contract would ensure prompt payment. Wrong! Can you imagine having to sue an attorney for your compensation? Well, it happens, and we are not speaking of questionable work product or excessive, inaccurate billing-just plain old defaulting on the bill. If our paperwork is in order, we usually collect in the end but who wants the aggravation? It's just one of those things you accept as a part of owning a business.

While a home office can be a huge advantage, it can also be another pitfall for freelancers. Consider that the work is always there--24/7, 52 weeks a year, on holidays, on weekends and even during vacation. While we know unreasonable attorney expectations for turnaround time are not exclusive to freelancers, several clients may present with emergencies at the same time. Working from a home office requires good time management skills and discipline.

Having a large client base is important when working with smaller firms and solo practitioners. Baxter-Warrington reports there have been times that her two primary clients have required that she devote all her time to their caseloads; at other times, she handles work for multiple clients everyday. She says the fluctuations are mostly due to the nature of family law during trials or heavy discovery periods, as well as her conscience. She doesn't want to do the assignments too early if the attorney thinks the matter will settle early; neither does she want to leave everything until the last minute.

Conclusion

To all those traditional paralegals who envision freelance paralegals jumping out of bed, strolling into the kitchen to pour their coffee and promptly sitting down in a home office....guess what? It can and does happen! But don't get any ideas that you can't draft a complex legal document in 'jammies as well you can in a navy blue suit and pearls...you just can't turn on the monitor camera when you're researching on-line.

All kidding aside, contract paralegal work is very rewarding and a challenging career path for experienced paralegals. Whether in a rural town or urban metropolis, the business of building and owning a paralegal company is double the work. The deadlines and emergencies can be greater than in traditional work, and we eat a lot of costs, but the benefits are great!

PERSONALITY TRAITS

A good career goal for one person may not be a good one for someone else. Everyone has different needs and wants. Values, interests and talents are different as well. So are personalities. How you look and act shows your personality to others. It's how others see you. Naturally, employers like workers with good personalities. Here some traits that make up a good personality.

* Attitude - how you feel about people. work and life. It shows in how you look at people and how you talk. Do you look at the good in others? This shows a good attitude.

* Courtesy - is being polite and not interrupting when others speak. It's good manners and shows a concern for others.

* Dependability - the dependable person can be counted on. On the job, the dependable person always gets the work done.

* Desire to Succeed - means wanting to do well. Success doesn't just happen, you have to work at it.

* Foresight - is planning ahead, not letting life just happen.

* Honesty - is being truthful and fair. Honest workers give a full day's work for a full day's pay.

Initiative - means seeing what needs to be done and doing it without being told.

* Open-mindedness - is listening to both sides of things. It's giving thought to what another person says when you don't agree. If your mind is closed on a subject, you cannot learn much more about it.

* Punctuality - means being on time for work and not keeping others waiting.

* Self-control - is controlling your emotions, holding back anger until you can let it out in a way that is acceptable.

* Sense of Humors - means the ability to see the funny side of things. It's an important on-the-job quality.

* Tact -means saying the right thing at the right time. It's very important to know how and when to say things while at the same time not make others look bad.
